With numbers like these, you can enjoy long drives around town before needing to stop and refuel.

Plus, the vehicle offers several features to help maximize fuel economy. One of them is the Stop and Start Engine System. This technology will shut off the engine when you bring the Highlander to a complete stop. As soon as you let your foot off the brake, the car will come back on. This system will help save more fuel, enabling you to drive farther, longer.

2023 Highlander Hybrid: MPG

Toyota Highlander MPGWhile the Toyota Highlander is highly fuel-efficient already, the hybrid version takes it a step further.

With this version of the SUV, you’ll get multiple EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings, including an EPA-estimated 36 city/35 highway MPG rating with FWD (Front-Wheel Drive).*

This automobile also offers five driving modes to take advantage of its fuel efficiency as much as possible. In Eco Mode, the throttle response is adjusted to help with fuel economy. It can also help you accelerate on low-traction surfaces, such as snow or ice. Normal Mode is for everyday driving, Sport Mode is for improved acceleration, and Trail Mode provides advanced traction and stability control for off-roading adventures.

Then there’s EV Mode, which uses only the electric motor in certain driving scenarios. For instance, this includes traveling at low speeds for short distances, such as in a parking garage.

Toyota Highlander: Performance Specs

The non-hybrid 2023 Highlander comes standard with a 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine, which produces 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, providing quick acceleration on the road.

The engine features direct injection and is mated to a Direct Shift 8-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission. Together, they help maximize MPG when cruising at high speeds. Plus, it helps the vehicle tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, which is enough power to hitch up any equipment you need for your next adventure.

Furthermore, the SUV is available with Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD (All-Wheel Drive). With this system, the engine power is distributed evenly from the front axle to the rear. It also manages the braking system from side to side to provide better control over every type of road.

The Multi-Terrain Select feature comes equipped on all trims with AWD systems and allows you to toggle among four modes: Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, Snow, and Normal. That way, you can maintain traction and stability control no matter what type of terrain you encounter.

Toyota Highlander: Innovative Safety Features

Toyota Highlander MPGWith all that power, you’ll also need a plethora of driver-assistance safety features designed to act as a second set of eyes on the road ahead. Every Highlander comes equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+ system, which includes six features.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

This feature helps mitigate or avoid collisions by monitoring the vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists traveling ahead of you and alerting you if it senses rapid approach. In the event of an emergency, it can also apply braking pressure.

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

This feature is ideal for highway commuters, as it will allow you to set a preferred following distance behind other vehicles and then automatically slows down or accelerates your SUV depending on the flow of traffic.

Lane Tracing Assist

The Lane Tracing Assist feature works directly with Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to help you stay securely within the center of your lane.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist

Toyota Highlander MPGWhen this feature senses you’re drifting out of your lane, it will provide audible and visual alerts to warn you, as well as gentle steering corrections to get you back within the lines.

Road Sign Assist

The Road Sign Assist feature utilizes an intelligent camera to recognize speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, and yield signs and will then display them on the Multi-Information Display.

Automatic High Beams

The Automatic High Beams provide improved visibility when traveling at night for you and fellow drivers out on the road. It will monitor your surroundings and automatically toggle between low and high beams when you’re traveling at speeds of 25 MPH or higher.

There are also a few available driver-assistance safety features you can add on, like the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which helps you back out of tight spots with ease. It was created to detect the vehicles passing behind you as you reverse and will alert you if the coast isn’t clear.
