TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE™ (TSS)

Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) is a suite of driver-assisting technologies offered in most Toyota models. This bundle of advanced safety features was designed to alert you to things you might miss on the road. As a result, you’d have a better chance of not getting into an accident.

Toyota Safety Sense C

Toyota Safety Sense™ C (TSS-C) is offered in compact cars like the Prius. One feature found in this suite is Lane Departure Alert. It’s designed to detect lane drifting on roads with clear markings. When you get a visual and audible alert, you’ll want to safely direct your car back to the center of your original lane.

Another included feature is Automatic High Beams, which is designed to help you see better at night without blinding other drivers. It’ll automatically turn on the high beams as needed. Then, when it recognizes the headlights of an oncoming car or the taillights of a preceding one, it’ll automatically switch to low beams.

Toyota Safety Sense P

Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P), on the other hand, is offered in midsize to large vehicles, such as the Camry and RAV4. (But, the Corolla, a compact car, also offers TSS-P.)

Like TSS-C, TSS-P comes with Automatic High Beams. However, it builds onto the Lane Departure Alert feature by adding Steering Assist. You may start drifting from your lane, but don’t react to the visual and audio warnings. If that’s the case, the system will make slight steering adjustments to get you back into your lane center.

Another feature found in TSS-P is a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. It uses a camera and radar to detect a car or person in front of you. If a frontal collision is likely, the system will prompt you to take action with audio and visual warnings. If you don’t react in time, it can automatically apply the brakes for you.

Toyota Star™ Safety System

While separate from TSS, the Toyota Star™ Safety System is another vital bundle of safety features. It comes standard in almost every Toyota model and helps drivers maintain control in any driving scenario.

In the Star™ Safety System, you’ll find features like:

  • Anti-Lock Brakes
  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Traction Control

It also comes with Brake Assist. If you can’t brake hard enough in an emergency situation, this feature will provide supplementary brake force. This way, it can stop the car just in time to help prevent a collision.

TSS is comprised of multi-feature active safety packages anchored by automated pre-collision warning and braking. TSS is designed to support the driver's awareness, decision-making and vehicle operation over a wide range of speeds under certain conditions. Packaged together in an integrated system, TSS features help address three key areas of accident protection: mitigating or preventing frontal collisions, helping to keep drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during nighttime driving.
